Ongata Rongai Catalyst emerged best Matatu in this year’s Nganya awards which went down in KICC Nairobi over the weekend.
The event, which aims to recognize exemplary Matatus, crews and technicians drew a mammoth crowd. Hundreds of youth turned up to witness the hottest matatus in Kenya.
Celebrations for the win were cut short when a young man was crushed while celebrating, young men majority being University students, were hanging dangerously on the flashy matatus to celebrate the crowning.
A video clip surfaced online shows the lifeless youth on the ground with his head crushed. The vehicle was later booked in a Nairobi police station.
The matatu is most popular in Nairobi and was boarded by American singer Trey Songz during his visit in Kenya for Coke Studio recording. Rongai’s Sparx which is most liked by girls also won in best sound categories.
The Rongai Nganyas are owned by ” big fish” in government and are said to be untouchable.
It is not clear how Catalyst beat Phantom 808 and Sparx to be crowned, 808 had won the Matatu of the year in an event held recently in Nakeel grounds.
