THE EAST AFRICA DATA CENTRE RECEIVE INNOVATION AWARD FROM GLOBAL TELECOMS BUSINESS MAGAZINE

THE EAST AFRICA DATA CENTRE RECEIVE INNOVATION AWARD FROM GLOBAL TELECOMS BUSINESS MAGAZINE

The East Africa Data Centre has been honoured at this year’s Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation awards.

The carrier neutral data centre based in Nairobi was named in the “Best Business Service Innovation” category alongside Liquid Telecom Kenya for their pioneering work in building the most connected data centre in East Africa.

Each year these prestigious global awards, organised by the much-respected Global Telecoms Business magazine, celebrate the joint work of vendors and operators in innovative projects that better serve the telecom industry’s end customers.

Opened in September 2013, East Africa Data Centre is the largest and most sophisticated in Africa outside South Africa. Designed to meet international standards TIA-942, it is the only purpose-built data centre outside South Africa and has solved the biggest challenges for data centres across the continent – namely connectivity, security and power supply.

Many blue chip customers are already present in the building, including banks, mobile network operators, ISPs and cloud solutions providers.

Dan Kwach, General Manager at East Africa Data Centre, said “Our dedicated data centre team has worked extremely hard to build the most connected place in east and central Africa. It’s an honour to receive this prestigious award and to be recognised by our peers in the global telecoms industry. By keeping African data in Africa we are helping to build Africa’s digital future.”

The East Africa Data Centre is carrier neutral with connectivity to the backbone and metrofibre offered by all the local Kenyan carriers and many international carriers such as Tata, Level3 and Seacom, making it the most connected data centre in east and central Africa. Ben Roberts, acting Managing Director of Liquid Telecom Kenya, said “The East Africa Data Centre has transformed how data traffic is handled in the region and is a worthy recipient of this global award. As the data centre’s major connectivity services partner, we’re extremely pleased that our provision of high-speed reliable connectivity has also been recognised at these prestigious awards.”

COMPLETE OF EAST AFRICA FIBRE RING TO INCREASE INTERNET RELIABILITY IN THE REGION

Historic development for businesses in East Africa as new regional fibre ring improves Internet resilience with previously unavailable routing options.

12th June 2014: Liquid Telecom today announced that it has completed the build of the East Africa Fibre Ring which connects Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and back into Kenya; creating the first fully redundant regional fibre ring, connecting these countries to each other and the rest of the world.  This will ensure that businesses across the East African community now receive continuity of Internet connectivity and a much more reliable service.

The East Africa Fibre Ring ensures that Liquid Telecom customers will not be affected by fibre cuts, which have blighted users in Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda up to now.  Network outages will no longer cause long periods of down-time when businesses cannot connect to the internet. For the first time, in the event of a fibre cut, internet traffic is automatically and instantly re-routed around the ring, giving consistently high speeds and continuous uptime for businesses and their customers, ensuring business continuity across the region.

The new East African Fibre Ring ensures more reliability and security of data connectivity, internet and business services than has ever been available, with Liquid Telecom showing measurable service improvements and superior SLA’s to businesses.

Nic Rudnick, CEO of the Liquid Telecom Group, said: “This is a historic service improvement for the people and businesses of east Africa, especially those in Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, who will not have experienced such reliable internet previously. This pioneering achievement will add value to east African businesses and enable online trade within the East African community and globally,, with reliable connectivity comparable to anywhere else in the world.

“Customers will immediately start to feel the benefits from our $20million investment in the region. The completion of the East African Fibre ring takes us another step towards building Africa’s digital future and giving better value for everyone using our network”.

The new fibre ring forms part of Liquid Telecom’s Pan-African fibre network, the largest single fibre network on the continent, spanning more than 17,000km across country borders and connecting areas where no fixed network has existed before. The completion of the ring is just the latest in a series of major achievements for multi-award-winning Liquid Telecom, a pioneering company which is widely recognised to have changed the face of telecoms in Africa.

Amb. Dr. Richard Sezibera, Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), the regional intergovernmental organisation of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, said:  “This is a huge milestone for East Africa. By providing our nations with a 21st century broadband network that directly connects us to each other and the outside world, Liquid Telecom continues to help the economic development of our region. I deeply admire, commend and give thanks to the company for their ongoing commitment, investment and resolve in creating a fibre ring of this scale.

Ngong residents warned of lynching suspects

Oloolua Location Chief Moses Mpesha has warned area residents of killing suspected criminals.

Speaking in Ngong Town recently, the chief said legal action will be taken against residents caught lynching people suspected of stealing.

Noting that cases of mob justice had increased in the area, the administrator called on the residents to involve police after arresting suspects.

Ngong Deputy OCPD Adems Furaha also raised a red flag over lynching of suspected thieves in the area and called on the residents to report the suspects to the police rather than taking law into their own hands.

The warning by the officers comes after two people were lynched by a mob. The two were suspected to belong to a gang that has been terrorizing area residents.

The first suspect, in his early 20s, was lynched after being found with several ATMs and identity cards, Residents suspected the man to be behind several robbery incidents in the area and burned him beyond recognition.

According to police reports, the deceased was not immediately identified.

Another suspect had been lynched after residents suspected him of being behind a failed robbery attempt in a school.

A resident who sought anonymity said that the man was among a gang of five that had attempted breaking into a learning institution after ambushing the night guards.

He said four others were armed with machetes fled leaving the deceased behind. The resident said the deceased was found in the morning with pool of blood prompting the mob to lynch him.

“The angry mob was angered by insecurity in the area, the man had been shot with arrows the previous night ,” he said.

Ngong Deputy Commissioner Evelyn Karisa called on parents to track their children noting that some young children had been behind crime in the town.

Karisa said she was angered by some parents who had planned a demonstration in the area demanding the  release of a school going child who was found with a gun last month and accused  some parents of    abandoning their children, a situation, she said, that had led to insecurity in the area.

“You parents are to blame; you should know where your children operate from. You should stop pampering young children with money; let them concentrate on their education,” she said.

The DP warned that her administration would organize an operation to ensure street children and beggars in the town were taken back to their homes adding that the parents who abandoned the needy were well-known.

The Commissioner also warned the residents against registering children as aliens and cautioned that they would be vetted before being issued with national identity cards.

The residents lamented that insecurity cases in Oloolua had risen and called on police to intensify patrols in the area.

There has been bad blood between the County Government and matatu operators in the town.
